Welcome

Welcome to the Budoshin Ju-Jitsu Yudanshakai website. The BJJY is dedicated towards furthering the art of Ju-jitsu within a traditional framework using modern technology.

Budoshin Ju-Jitsu is a traditional form of the art, based upon the teachings of Jack Seki and a lineage tracing back though Ibaragi Toshifusa [1597-1677] founder of Kito-Ryu Ju-jitsu, and Takagi Orieman Shigenbudo [1615-1711]  founder of Yoshin Ryu Ju-Jitsu. Within this traditional approach, the strong emphasis on self-defense, efficient and smooth movement, and an inherent philosophy of honor, respect, self-control and non-violence, have made Budoshin Ju-Jitsu an extremely effective martial art even in today’s world. Experienced practitioners of Budoshin Ju-Jitsu have the ability to subtly thwart an attack with minimal effort, create varying levels of pain to subdue and control an assailant with little or no injury, or severely injure and incapacitate a violent attacker if necessary – all within a few seconds. Ju-Jitsu is the parent art of most of today’s martial arts and trends. Ju-Jitsu is used by military, law-enforcement and protective-service agencies throughout the world. If it wasn’t such an effective form of self-defense it wouldn’t have survived through the ages.

Budoshin Ju-Jitsu is designed to help you learn the art of traditional ju-jitsu and an effective personalized self-defense system in the most efficient manner possible. Admittedly the best situation would be for you to learn Budoshin Ju-Jitsu in a dojo with a qualified sensei. However, that’s an ideal situation. The reality is that there are many people like you who would like to learn and master traditional Ju-Jitsu, but can’t find a dojo. Up until the mid 1990’s you were just out of luck. You could get some books on ju-jitsu [preferably mine], but beyond that you were left to your own devices.

Starting in the 1990’s three things happened that changed the “traditional” manner in which ju-jitsu was taught. First, Panther Productions released my 8-tape series [now on DVD] which took students step by step from white belt all the way up officially to shodan [and nidan if you use the DVDs wisely]. This video production made it possible for individuals to learn the physical aspects of the art in the convenience of their homes – or even in a non-ju-jitsu dojo. This was a major technological breakthrough that made a top-quality video program available for everyone who wanted to learn Budoshin Ju-Jitsu.

The second major element was the growth of the internet as a medium of communication and changes in video and audio technology. The growth of the internet made this website possible. The internet has made worldwide instantaneous communication possible between you and me. This website has made it possible to present a great deal of up-to-date information readily available to the serious student of the art. The advent of digital video and audio recording devices has made long-distance testing and evaluation a tangible reality. Video recordings [based upon testing formats in the Student and Black Belt Handbooks] can be easily and inexpensively sent to me for evaluation. Digital audio evaluations [followed by written evaluations for higher ranks] can immediately be sent to you via the internet for almost immediate feedback.

The third major element has been the cross-referencing of techniques from my videos, my “Ohara” books, the “big book” and the techniques listed in the Student and Black Belt Handbooks. Students, whether they are in my dojo or in some distance location, now have multiple references for techniques. All the mediums of learning are cross-referenced for ease of learning. There is no more guessing about what sensei is looking for on a performance exam.

All of this combines to create a unique and highly efficient instructional program designed to help you learn Budoshin Ju-Jitsu regardless of where you are geographically. Modern technology has been integrated into making a traditional martial art easily available for you to learn and master. All you need is a workout partner and safe mats to practice on. The rest is up to you. The Budoshin Ju-Jitsu program presented on this website is a totally upfront and open system. There are no secrets and no surprises. In Budoshin Ju-Jitsu, whether it be in my dojo or on your own, you will always know where you are, where you’re going, and what you’ll have to do to get there. This openness and professionalism breeds success.

You want a black belt in Budoshin Ju-Jitsu? You can do it. If you’re willing to make the commitment the support is there for you to succeed and it’s all up front. My goal is to help you meet your goal: earning your black belt in Budoshin Ju-Jitsu!
